Is Oil Of Oregano Safe For Babies And Children?

Oil of oregano comes from a natural source, the wild oregano plant, Origanum vulgare. The leaves of this plant are crushed and the essential oil is extracted using cold process.

There are no chemical fertilizers and no chemical additives used in the growing of the plant and the processing of the leaves. Therefore all the substances contained in the extracted oil are all natural substances. Generally, they should not pose any danger to humans, including babies and children.

Indeed, oil of oregano contains powerful chemical substances that can kill microbes. But we still need to be careful that we are taking the corretc amount, because taking too much can be harmful to the body. But if we take the correct dosage of oregano oil, it will kill harmful pathogens without giving us any side effects. This is the advantage that oregano oil has over other drugs and antibiotics.

The best thing about oil of oregano is its antimicrobial properties. This oil will be very beneficial to children. If your child is like others, he will be very active and playful. Oftentimes when he is playing, he will put his fingers in his mouth – giving entrance to a host of bacteria and other harmful germs. This is where oil of oregano can come in handy. Among the potent substances contained in oreganol are carvacrol and thymol. These two acts together synergistically to stop the growth of germs that could make your child sick. It is effective in killing bacteria, fungi, parasites and viruses. Therefore your children will be safe with this essential oil.  

If your child is suffering from skin diseases, colds, flu, fever, stomach troubles and other common ailments, you can give him oil of oregano to rid him of whatever is causing his sickness. One rule though is very important: children below 7 years old should not take this essential oil internally. The strong substances contained in the oil might cause irritation and possible problems in their tender organs.

Following are the recommended doses of oregano oil for children of various ages.

1) For children aged 6 months to 2 years – oregano oil should not be given internally to children in this age group. Instead, rub 1 to 2 drops of the oil on both feet and the spine. If they already have a cold, congestion or fever, apply the oil on each foot and cover it with socks. You can do until the condition improves but only up to a maximum period of 10 days.
2) For children aged 3 to 6 years – taking oil of oregano internally for this age group is not recommended either. But you can increase the amount of oil you can apply on both feet to 2 to 3 drops. In addition, there is no longer a limit on the number of days you can do this. If the child already has a cold, fever or flu, apply the oil to his feet and cover them with socks before they go to bed.
3) For children aged 7 to 10 years – Add one to two drops of oreganol to their milk or juice and repeat this three times a day.
4) For children aged 10 and above – Add two to three drops of oil of oregano in their milk or juice and repeat three times a day. You can facilitate the healing by putting two to three drops of the oil under their tongue, if they can stand the taste.
